Standard I-Teachers Demonstrate Leadership
Element Ia Teachers Lead in their Classroom:
- Data Collection: I use data to help guide my instruction for remediation and enrichment. I maintain my own data wall, as well a PLT CFA data wall.
- A Safe and Orderly Environment: Students are given clear expectations in my classroom. These expectations are posted as well as included on their syllabus. A copy of my syllabus can be found here.
- Collaboration: Students are encouraged to collaborate in my classroom! They work in pairs and small groups to complete both small and large tasks. Students are often asked to reflect on their collaboration after a task is completed. Here's an example of a reflection form.
- During virtual learning, students were able to continue to collaborate using Google breakout groups.
- Student Self Monitoring: I encourage students to become more independent! In middle school, students should get into the habit of monitoring their own grades. During our weekly advisory period, I ask students to log-on to PowerSchools to view their grades and to complete an advisory form. This insures students know how to log on as well as self-monitor their grades. Here is an example of the weekly check-in used during flex:
Element Ib Teachers Demonstrate Leadership in the School:
- PLT: I work with my PLT on implementation of the new curriculum, differentiation, and remediation ideas.
- EL Implementation: This year I took the lead in creating the slides we used for the new curriculum. The curriculum needed to be adapted to suit the virtual environment.
- LMITT: Last year I served on the Literacy, Media, Technology, and Instruction Team. My work with this team included participating in a diversity audit of our materials in the media center, facilitating literacy trainings, as well as attending various workshops.
- SEL: This year I served on the Social and Emotional Learning Committee. I worked with the team to create lessons and activities that encouraged student collaboration, self-reflection, and personal growth. Click the image to view an example of a Social Emotional Lesson that I created on Anxiety.
- Quarterly Award Ceremony: This year I worked with admin and grade level chairs to create a quarterly award ceremony for students. I led our practice session, facilitated assigning roles, and helped organize student nominations.
- New Staff Interviews: I participated in several interviews and attended the WCPSS job fair as a representative of East Cary Magnet Middle School.
Element Ic Teachers Lead in the Teaching Profession:
- Literacy Training: Last year I was given the opportunity to go to several literacy workshops. I was able to take that information and lead three sessions to train my colleagues.
- Peer Observation: I had the opportunity to observe a beginning teacher this year. I observed her lesson and met with her afterwards to provide feedback on her instruction.
- IEP/504/LEP/Tier III: I regularly attend these meetings to provide input on students and to collaborate with the Special Education staff.
- Student Concerns: I work with the school counselor when an issue arises with a particular student.
- Parent contact: I communicate with parents – answering their questions and concerns as well as sharing my concerns. I also reach out to parents every Monday regarding students who have missing work. I track my communication with parents using a spreedsheet.
- Grades: I update my grades on PowerSchools several times a week, and provide my students with interims and missing work sheets.
- Intervention Implementation: During virtual learning, the 7th grade team noticed that students needed to take time each week to review their assignments and reflect on their learning. We created a schedule that allowed each student to do this weekly. An example of my student reflection form can be found here.
- Fair rules: My classroom rules, expectations, and late-work policy align with the school and county expectations and are enforced for all of my students. These rules are posted in my classroom, provided to students at the beginning of year on my classroom syllabus, and the syllabus can also be found on my google classroom.
- Safe learning environment: My classroom is a safe environment where students are free to express their ideas without fear of embarrassment. In ELA, we participate in various discussions. Students are free to share their opinions.
- Staff Expectations: I attend all required meetings, arrive at work on time, and follow the required procedures.
